The Death of HB 222 May Keep Girls Stripping

James writes in a comment asking if there’s truth to Governor Perry blocking the Texas HB 222 (AKA Triple Deuce), which is patiently waiting to be heard.  Unfortunately, for us math geeks, I have heard this is true.  I’m sad, as this would be my attempt in earning my WSOP buy-ins.

I guess the bill is just like it’s label.  It’s nice to flop a low set but every other set is better.   And I’m sticking by my… if the bill dies, then girls will continue to have the government’s support in stripping off clothes for money  but go to jail for dealing cards in a game using math skills.*  Which totally makes sense.

For now, you can use Twitter to send out an RT (Re-Tweet) for support by copy and paste of the following:

RT @PPApoker: PLZ tell TX @GovernorPerry at (800) 252-9600 to stop blocking a vote on HB 222, a bill that allows poker in Texas. PLS RT!”

RT @PPApoker: PLZ tell TX @GovernorPerry at (800) 252-9600 that poker is a game of skill that should be legal in Texas. PLS RT.”

These updates can also be found on my Twitter page. Don’t forget to note the phone number above to make your call.

Up next! New bill to legalize chess ( a total game of chance) betting.

*No offense to strippers, just using them to point out a paradox.

Texas Bill Still Hold’in

Texas Hold’em might be legal outside of a Texas household kitchen… one day.  Pokerati Dan spoke to Rep. Menendez  today who said the House might get to HB-222 on Monday.  I’m still baffled there are people against this bill who think its baaad, baaad.  Certainly, people tend to blame the Christians but I can assure you there are plenty of Christians in support of the bill.   The bordering States might be a better target to release frustration as they won’t mind when you take your money over the State Line.

Speaking of religion, a Judeo-Christian belief is to take care of our earth, soil, plants and animals so maybe the reason they’re against the bill is because they’re concerned of tree destruction to make playing cards.  I mean, assuming they’re even aware the rain forest supplies the majority a large portion of the earth’s oxygen but the trees are being used for more paper for us to throw away. Whoa, where am I going?  Oh right, not oxygen, I meant to say oxymoron.  You know like, it’s legal for our daughters to get naked for money but not OK to pass around some playing cards… that are now made from plastic.  Stupid.

And while we could certainly say the ol’ I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine plays a part, I’d be a hypocrite if I said I had never made a similar statement or deal myself.

Gotta run, I’m going to let my son play Lego Star Wars for Wii IF he cleans up his mess first.

Texas HB 222 Passes 6-3

texas-hb-2221

texas-hb-2221For the second time, Texas has passed a bill out of the House Committee attempting to legalize poker in the Lone Star State.  Not too long ago, the HB 222 vote was 6-3 sending the bill on its way up the hill.  Hopefully, we will have a date set soon.  I will certainly keep you posted.

Thank you for all the support so many of you  have shown.  Keep up the emails to your State Representatives!

Texas HB 222 Notes + Update

chips

chipsSince there were not enough committee members present to vote on HB 222last Wednesday, it will happen this week.  If I remember correctly, the bill will need 6 out of 9 affirmatives in order to send HB 222 on up the hill.  For those of you who listened to the live stream, then you might have notice my mention of, special thanks to Mike Lavigne, Citadel’s 103 million poker hand study with results supporting poker as a game of skill.  Boy, Napoleon Dynamitewould be proud to know it isn’t that we’re just luuuucky.

As for my lame testimony.  Well, I had some last minute changes that sort of threw me off my original plan.  After all, do I really need to tell grown adults that raking a poker game would generate revenue for the state, create jobs in poker and tourism and the state is spending money on the inevitable? Nope and I already said two years ago.  Furthermore, I lack an economics degree to back up my point.  Although, I don’t think it takes an economist to understand the value of revenue vs overhead nor feel the burden of hard times.  But…like…whatever.

Additionally, I bit my tongue to respond to an Internet comment I read which was something like…so, what, we should hope our children grow up to be poker dealers?  As a mom, my first reaction was…I certainly understand her point.  Of course, even in Texas, we want our children to grow up to be doctors and lawyers and such.  Yep, that was partly from Willie Nelson.  However, the more I thought about it… I realized hey, wait a second.  Is that really that bad? No. It’s not.   And here’s two reasons why:

1. If you have a child who wants to deal cards for money, then you have a child who wants to deal cards.  I would hope a parent would want there child to be able to deal cards in a nice regulated environment where they may even have health insurance rather than some backroom where they risk going to jail or worse.  So basically, if you need the government to step in to help you control your child as an adult then you need more therapy. Seriously.

2.  How many girls have told you they are stripping to pay for college?  Now, to each his own as pushing a ban on such institutions is not my point.  But isn’t it sort of an oxymoron that its legal for children to grow up and take their clothes off for money but bad, bad, bad if they touch those dirty cards that are used for go fish, bridge, gin rummy and gasp… poker?  Tha Horra!  Oh wait a second, we’re just talking about females so it’s probably OK.  Fine, then lets focus on males… was Jesus wrong for spinning the dreidel on Chanukah? If you find putting Jesus and Chanukah together in a sentence confusing or uncomfortable then click here.

Please excuse any grammar issues, I threw this up quickly as I’m busy teaching my 7 year-old son the quadratic equation to be a better poker player in order to pay for MIT where he wants to become a robotics engineer.

Legalizing Texas Poker Tomorrow

chris-ferguson-doyle-brunson1

chris-ferguson-doyle-brunson1Will Doyle Brunson and other top pros from Texas see poker legalized in their home state soon?  Tomorrow the attempt will be made as Texas HB 222will be heard at the capital.  Once again, I will be testifying in hopes of making Texas Holdem legal in Texas.  In the past, most Texans have felt legalizing poker was a pipe dream; however, the bill from two years ago actually made it to the House Floor which was a milestone for Texas poker.  Although the bill died, everyone agreed we would have a great shot in two years.  Which brings us to… tomorrow.

I wish I had more notice to rally up a poker posse of media, pros, players and fans to show up for support tomorrow.  That being said, show up at the Capital tomorrow to show your support in legalizing poker in Texas!  HB 222 is scheduled sometime shortly after lunch, however, things can change rather quickly (but usually slowly) so follow me on twitter for any changes.

I have no idea who will be testifying tomorrow.  In our last attempt we had Pokerati Dan, Clonie Gowen, Lyle Berman and poker legend Crandall Addington (who had some of the best old school stories).

See the news video below on the previous bill.
