Twitter broke my heart. OK, not really, but it bummed me out. In Feb of 2007 I had (what I thought was) a great sms idea. Develop a site and software for poker players to sms updates and info to a website so everyone could follow at one location. I was inspired by the busy phone lines of 2005 Hurricane Rita traffic jam (when I taught my mother-in-law to text to help her find gas ) and my ever buzzing phone at the 2006 WSOP from sms update requests. With text fans increasing and sms charges decreasing, I couldn’t believe there wasn’t a site providing such a service. Or so it seemed. So… I shared my idea with with a couple of friends, forked out some cash to an intellectual property attorney, bought a domain name and jumped into a research frenzy.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything out there except for one site…. www.letmeparty.com, a site providing free sms to your blog, MySpace or site. I signed up and contacted the programmer, but they were too busy with school at the time. Guess someone let them party for a loooong time or something. Jack Dorsey… where were you when I needed you most?
Anyway, long story short, a few months later the word Twitter became a new noun, 2007 WSOP provided busy times, the project wasn’t moving fast enough to beat a fast paced tech world while keeping the idea quiet and did I mention the issue of busy? So…meh. Good news though…I can sms updates whenever I want because… I use Twitter now.
I’m not a bitter Twitter bitch. In fact, I’m glad Dorsey was able to do something really cool that’s free. So, he need not fear that I would stoop for an ego-vengeance or physical lawsuit like the Opti-Grab cross-eyed guy in The Jerk. After all, we’re talking about technology. And thanks to technology… we have blogs for the need-to-be-right-or-make-everyone-listen disorder (which apparently I’m suffering from). Plus, Anksy Gugel ranked me 22 in the top 100 poker blogs and that means that someone out there actually listens to me (other than my husband when facing my index finger and a hot frying pan). I mean, I didn’t even know I had a blog until… nevermind, I don’t have anything clever to follow.
Sorry to ramble, it’s been a while. Nonetheless, If you’re wanting to follow a bunch of peep’s tweets then check out some cool applications here.
Oh yeah, the domain name I bought to track poker players is/was… www.StackTrackers.com . It’s for sale but due to economic hard times I’ve reduced the price from one billion to one million dollars. Because buying a ten dollar domain is way better than buying a house or a million tea bags.
thanks and congrats to you.
sorry about the brake lights… it reminds me of my other ideas of the light bulb and the topsy tail.
yep, i know. that’s why i was bummed.
I know this isn’t the point of your post, but for the record, Twitter started in 2006. I joined in late 2006, but there weren’t many people to talk to … yet.
