Hurricane Ike Evacuation

We’re finally leaving home after hours of Hurricane preparations.  More specifically… Hurricane Ike. Signs out of the yards, machinery to photograph and move indoors, pick up prescriptions and more importantly… remember to pack Wii games. Whole Foods was rumored to be giving away steaks, fish and lobster before Hurricane Rita but I didn’t have time for grocery shopping.

Since my husband’s woodworking shop is located south of Houston, we worried we would hit traffic on our way back into town. Yet, we had smooth sailing. When we stopped to buy water, 98.7% customers were also buying gas, food and water. However, 1.3% were buying beer. I’m not saying they were gansters but they looked like gangsters.  Too bad the news media missed the interview opportunity because mainstream news media does a good job making Houstonians look like rednecks.

Instead of leaving town last night, we delayed our hurricane evacuation until this morning.  After Hurricane Rita’s infamous traffic jam, we had concerns of being stuck on the road with two bored screaming kids. And here we are… 9am driving to Austin without traffic and my kids are happily watching the movie “The Cat in the Hat.”  Yet, the who-picks-the-next-movie fight is coming. Note to self, call Amy Calistri while in Austin for poker or coffee.  Second note to self, arrange baby sitting so I can play the PokerListings Run-Good Challenge.

I don’t know what will happen to our properties, but I know my family will be safe in Austin.  Or at least relaxed in the cool AC.  My six-year-old son can tell you anything you want to know about natural disasters. Making kids stay home during hurricanes must be very scary.   I’m confident those who stayed home will be safe but I know from experience, there are dark scary moments.  The wind blows, trees snap, transformers explode and the house rocks. I also hope owners picked up their beautiful horses at the equestrian barns. I hate thinking about poor animals stuck outside during a hurricane.

Thanks to my friends for all the good lucks wishes.

Good luck to the family. At least you’ll be safe. Here’s hoping the properties come through untouched.
